PROJECT BACKGROUND
The Covid-19 pandemic took the world by surprise. Separation and change lead millions of people to have to adapt to altered and new ways of being. A way that required less of the outer self, and called for solace with the inner-self. Solitude is not a desired experience and it is not something that people are generally taught to deal with, if you were to look for books on how to do so the perspectives are limited. According to Lisette Therese, “private” and “public” might be assumed as universal and thus non-gendered, but representations of solitude in the Western literary canon reflect a primarily white male experience. Being a member of the BIPOC community meant coping with the pandemic was something that had to be learned from within. This was not easy. According to a review by Science Progress, “Mental health issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic are on the rise because of various factors such as fear of infection or death, leading to elevated levels of confusion, anger, anxiety and post-traumatic symptoms amongst survivors.” In this space of trying to find joy, I found new ways of expression. I found ways to release my pains of solitude and explore new ways of creation in the process. The pandemic went from being a burden to this vector space of creativity that gave way to new development within myself. “Planet Wake Up” is the product of the development found through the pandemic. I created a series of paintings, playing cards, and clothing designs surrounding my experience of self development and becoming more mindful of my surroundings. I plan to share this piece with people of all intersections. I believe the combination of media and themes within the work will allow for diverse audiences to find a point of relation.
